Pennington Junior School Landscape Project

In the summer of 2000 we embarked on a grounds improvement project to make changes to the outdoor environment and make the site a more interesting place for the children.

A Landscape Steering Group was established which was led by Jane Hunter from the Hampshire Schools Landscape Project.

Drawings of the site were shared with School Council members and questionnaires were given to every class to collate the children's ideas for improving their playground. Pupils also took part in a walkabout of the site, discussing and recording their views.

Other members of the school community ,including Governors, lunchtime supervisors, caretaker, teachers and parents were also consulted.

It was decided to focus on certain areas of the site and plans included creating a social area, the erection of an adventure playground, planning the feasibility of the pond, demolition of the old outdoor swimmimg pool and conversion of the changing rooms into an arts block with an ajoining amphitheatre.

Below is an example of the pupil questionnaire.
